Cost
$28 ($34)
$1,575 for standalone course
$5,730 for a standard 3-credit course
$1,000-$1,500 for same amount of instruction locally
Material
Covers everything from the theory of sing-ability to more complex lyricism involving metaphorical imagery and wordplay
Each course only focuses on 1 element - melody, harmony, etc. Each costing $1,575
Unpredictable/usually no plan or syllabus.
Accessibility
Affordable, available to watch anytime, anywhere, and at your own pace.
Pricey, and sometimes only offered during certain times of the year
It's hard to find Songwriting Private Lessons. Most people try to learn songwriting from their guitar teacher, but it's not a given that they know how to write songs, or teach songwriting if they know how to write
Community
(Accountability + Feedback)
Free Lifelong Membership to our online Song Circle where you can receive peer feedback on your songs
No obvious next steps for accountability, community, or feedback listed on website
No inherent peer community. Expensive way to get accountability and feedback, but effective
Teaching Philosophy
My teaching style is emotionally driven, focusing on using songwriting as a healing practice, and building a life that offers career possibility but prioritizes long term emotional sustainability to keep Songwriting a fun, self-reflective, and self-expressive practice for the rest of your life.
Academic - while Berklee advertises that it is geared toward music careers, in all honesty, most songwriting careers are incredibly difficult to attain and make a living from. It's not fair to imply to students that their courses are a pathway to sustainable careers in music. While not impossible, it's more possible through connections than it is through academics
Mixed bag - all private teachers are different and while some may really fit well with your learning style, it's hard to research since most teachers do not advertise or publicize themselves and the way they teach

Teaching Philosophy
My teaching is geared toward accessibility, making it as easy to approach writing in as many ways as possible, and I like to focus on building the skill of songwriting as a healing practice, and building a life that offers career possibility but prioritizes long term emotional sustainability to keep Songwriting a fun, self-reflective, and self-expressive practice for the rest of your life.
Academic - while Berklee advertises that it is geared toward music careers, in all honesty, most songwriting careers are incredibly difficult to attain and make a living from. This course was thoughtfully made to be both accessible and engaging for all skill levels. It has helped both beginner songwriters to start writing, while offering completely different approaches, perspectives, and techniques to experienced writers. There are also some advanced topics covered but if you start from the beginning, you should be able to get it!
The course takes a little under 3 hours to get through all the videos. It's very possible to take 1 video a day, and finish within 1 week.
Unfortunately not. The more advanced concepts later in the course really depend on the singability concepts taught in the beginning of the course as a foundation for building flexibility with words and their application to melody
I built the course with a very specific structure and sequence in mind because otherwise, it would be like a YouTube video that starts in the middle of the process and doesn't give you any framework for doing it yourself.
Nope! In fact, there are plenty of royalty-free instrumental tracks to write to that are available to download along with the course. And if you want to focus solely on lyrics, there are also 15 melody outlines available to choose from and write your lyrics to.
*Royalty-free means you can record to the instrumental tracks and release them and I won't ask for credit. So you learn the melody, and bring your song to a studio with the backing track, and release it the next week if you really wanted!
